Kuzhi Paniyaram/Gunta Ponganalu

Kuzhi Paniyaram or Gunta Ponganalu is a popular South Indian dish which is prepared by steaming the batter using a mould. The Idli/dosa batter can be used for making Kuzhi Paniyaram/Gunta Ponganalu. It can be enjoyed as a tea time snack, breakfast or for kids lunches. It can be served with Coconut chutney, Onion chutney or with Idli podi.

Preparation time – 15 min
Cooking time – 15 min
Serves – 2 to 4

Ingredients:

Idli/dosa batter – 2 cups
Onion – 1 medium sized chopped finely
Green chili – 2 chopped finely
Ginger – 1 inch chopped finely
Curry leaves – few finely chopped
Coriander leaves/ cilantro – 1 tbsp
Salt – as per your taste
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Chana dal – 1/2 tsp
Urad dal – 1/4 tsp
Oil

Method:

1. In a pan add in 2 tsp of oil and allow it to heat up. Now add the mustard seeds and when it splutters add in urad dal, chana dal and saute for 30 sec.

2. Now add the onions, green chili, curry leaves, ginger and saute till the onions turn translucent. Add in required salt and mix well.

3. Allow the mixture to cool down a little. Now add the mixture along with chopped coriander leaves to the idli/dosa batter and mix well.

4. Grease the paniyaram pan with little oil and heat up the pan. Now pour the batter in each hole. Cover the pan and allow it to cook on a medium flame for two minutes. Flip the paniyaram and cook it uncovered for a 2 minutes. Cook well on both the sides until golden in color.

Enjoy Kuzhi Paniyam hot with chutney on the side.
