Idli podi ( Dry chutney powder )

Idli podi is a coarse mixture of dry spices. This homemade chutney powder/ Idli podi is a side dish which serves along with Idli / Dosa. You can also mix it with steamed white rice using Ghee or oil. There are many variations in Idli podi and one of the commonly used method is given below

Preparation time – 5 minutes
Cooking time – 20 minutes
Serves – 6

Ingredients

Urad dal / Black gram dal without skin – 1 cup
Sesame seeds – 1/4 cup
Asafoetida / Hing – 1/2 tsp
Garlic gloves – 5 pieces
Dry red chilies – 10
Curry leaves – 15
Salt – 1 tsp or as per your taste

Method

1. Take a pan. Fry the Urad dal till the color of the dal changes to light brown. Keep the flame in medium while frying. Transfer the fried dal in a bowl.

2. Now fry the sesame seeds till it starts to splutter. Transfer to the bowl.

3. Dry roast red chilies along with curry leaves till the colour of red chilies changes to light brown. Add garlic pieces and fry a minute. Make sure the flame is low while frying.

4. Now add the roasted urad dal and sesame seeds into the fried chilies. Now add the asafoetida powder and turn off the flame so that asafoetida will not get burned.

5. Let the mixture cool down. Grind the mixture into a coarse powder.

6. Idli podi is ready to serve with idli / dosa. Mix the idli podi with sesame oil or Ghee. Enjoy!
