Idiyappam which is also called as String Hoppers is a popular dish in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka. It is a popular breakfast recipe or can be served for dinner together with curry or coconut chutney. In Sri Lanka it is served with coconut milk and sugar. Idli rice is used in this preparation but it can be prepared with rice flour.
Preparation time – 20 min
Cooking time – 15 min
Serves – 4 to 6
Soaking time – 4 to 5 hrs
Ingredients:
Idli rice – 2 cups
Salt – as required
Sesame oil – 2 tbsp
Oil – required for greasing
Method:
1. Wash and soak the idli rice for a minimum for 4 hrs and then grind it smooth. Add in required salt and mix well.
2. Heat sesame oil in a pan. Add in the ground idli rice and keep stirring constantly on a medium flame till a smooth dough is formed.
3. Now take a fine noodle mould and place it in the chakli/murukku maker. Grease the chakli/murukku maker with little oil.
4. Make a cylindrical shape out of the prepared dough and place it in the chakli/murukku maker and close it tightly. Gently squeeze the dough in a circular motion on a greased idli plates.
5. Place the idiyappam in a steamer and steam for 10 minutes on a medium flame.
Serve it hot with Sothi or with Coconut milk & sugar.
