Green Mung Dal fry

Green Mung dal fry is a quick and easy dish which can be prepared for lunch or dinner. This healthy and nutritious dish is prepared from whole green mung along with onions, tomatoes and other spices. It goes extremely well with roti or steamed rice.

Serves – 4

Ingredients:

Whole green mung – 3/4 cup
Onion – 1 medium sized finely chopped
Tomatoes – 2 medium sized finely chopped
Ginger and garlic paste – 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp
Chili powder – 1/2 tsp or as per taste
Salt – as required
Coriander powder – 3/4 tsp
Garam masala powder – 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds/Jeera – 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida/hing – 1/8 tsp
Coriander leaves/cilantro – few finely chopped
Oil – 2 tbsp

Method:

1. Wash the green mung well and soak it for 4 to 6 hrs. Drain the water and add the green mung to the pressure cooker along with 2 cups of water. Cover the pressure cooker and let it whistle for one time.

The green mung has to be cooked well but it should not be mushy.

2. Add 2 tbsp of oil in a pan and allow it to heat up. Now add in the mustard seeds and when it splutters add in the cumin seeds and asafoetida. Now add in the onions and saute till they turn translucent.

3. When the onions are well sauteed, add in the ginger and garlic paste and cook till the raw smell goes away. Now add in the tomatoes and cook till they become nice and soft. Add in salt, turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder and the garam masala powder and cook it for a minute or two.

4. Now add in the cooked whole green mung along with some water. Cover it and allow it to boil on a medium flame for 10 minutes. Adjust the salt and the consistency according to your taste. Finally, add the finely chopped coriander leaves and mix well.

 

Serve this delicious Green Mung dal with any kind of roti, pulav or with steamed rice.
