Tomato Chutney

Tomato chutney is a spicy and tangy chutney which is prepared from ripe tomatoes. It is a great accompaniment for any South Indian breakfast like Idli, Dosa, Uttapam and it goes well with roti or paratha. It is very simple to prepare using minimum ingredients.

Preparation time – 10 min
Cooking time – 20 min
Serves – 4

Ingredients:

Onion – 1 medium sized finely chopped
Tomatoes – 2 medium sized finely chopped
Salt – as required
Sesame oil – 3 tsp
Dry red chilies – 4 or as per your taste
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Oil – 1 tsp required for tempering

Method:

1. Heat sesame oil in a pan. Add in the dry red chilies and saute it for a minute or two. Remove the red chilies from the pan and set aside. In the same pan add in onions and cook till they are nice and tender.

2. Add in the tomatoes and cook till they are nicely mashed. Switch off the stove and let it cool down.

3. Transfer all the ingredients into a mixie along with the dry red chilies and grind it to a smooth paste.

4. Heat a tsp of oil. Add in mustard seeds and when it splutters add in the ground mixture and mix well. Add in required salt. Let it cook on a medium flame for 5 minutes.
