Kondakadalai Kuzhambu/Black Chickpea Curry

Kondakadalai which is also called as Black chick peas or Kala chana is used to prepare many different recipes. The kondakadalai / black chickpeas / kala chana is soaked overnight and cooked in a tangy gravy along with other spices. This kondakadalai kuzhambu is a spicy and tangy dish which goes very well with steamed rice. White chickpeas can also be used to prepare this kuzhambu.

Preparation time – 20 min
Cooking time – 20 min
Soaking time – 8 hrs
Serves – 4 to 6

Ingredients:

Kondakadalai/Black chickpeas/Kalachana – 1/2 cup
Onion – 1 medium sized chopped finely
Tomato – 1 medium sized chopped finely
Garlic  – 4 cloves chopped into pieces
Curry leaves – few
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt – as required
Sambar powder/Curry powder – 2 tsp or as per your taste
Tamarind – 1 small gooseberry size
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Oil – 4 tsp

Ingredients required for grinding:

Coconut – 4 tbsp
Roasted chana dal – 1 tsp

Method:

1. Soak the kondakadalai/kala chana/black chickpeas overnight. Drain the water. Add it to pressure cooker with enough water and pressure cook it for 3 to 4 whistles. Set aside the boiled chickpeas.

2. Soak the tamarind in some hot water and extract the juice. Set it aside. Grind coconut and roasted chana dal to a smooth paste and set it aside.

3. Heat 4 tsp of oil in a pan. Add in mustard seeds and let it splutter. Now add in onions, garlic, curry leaves and saute till onions turn translucent.

4. Add in tomato and cook well. Add turmeric powder, sambar powder/curry powder and mix well. Add in the juice of the tamarind. Allow it to boil well.

5. Add in boiled kondakadalai/black chickpeas along with some water. Add required salt and boil well on a medium flame for 10 min. Finally add in the coconut and roasted chana dal paste and mix. Let it boil for another 5 min and switch off the stove. Adjust the salt and the consistency according to your taste.

Spicy and Tangy Kondakadalai Kuzhambu is all ready to enjoy. A perfect combination with steamed rice.
