Bisi Bele Bath is a popular recipe from Karnataka, India. It is prepared using rice, toordal and various vegetables. It is delicious and a wonderful one pot meal. It is best served warm along with a papad.

Ingredients:
Rice – 1 cup
Toor Dal – 1/2 cup
Tamarind – small lemon sized
Tomatoes – 2 medium sized chopped
Carrots – 1 medium sized cut into small pieces
Green beans – 1/4 cup cut into small pieces
Potatoes – 2 medium sized cut into small pieces
Green peas – 1/4 cup
Salt – as per your taste
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Oil – 3 bsp
Ghee/Clarified butter – 2 tbsp
Corinader leaves/cilantro – few finely chopped for garnish
Ingredients required for dry roasting to make the Bisi Bele Bath powder:
Coriander seeds/whole dhaniya – 2 tbsp
Chana dal – 1 tbsp
Cumin seeds/Jeera – 1 tsp
Methi seeds – 1/4 tsp
Rice – 1/2 tsp
Red chilies – 8 or 10 (according to your taste)
Black peppercorns – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Ingredients required for tempering:
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Red chilies – 3
Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida/hing – a pinch
Curry leaves – few
Method:
1. Wash the rice and toor Dal together couple of times and soak it for 30 minutes. Soak the tamarind in warm water for 10 to 15 min and extract the juice and set aside.
In a pressure pan add in all the cut vegetables along with a cup of water and let it whistle for 1 time. Wait till the pressure goes down completely and set aside the boiled vegetables.
In a pan dry roast all the ingredients written under the “dry roasting section” slowly on a medium flame for 10 min. Once it is well roasted transfer to a plate and allow it to cool down. Now put that in a mixie and make it into a fine powder. The bisi bele bath powder is ready to be used in the preparation.



2. Drain the water from rice and the toor Dal and add it to the pressure pan along with 3 cups of water. Let the pressure pan whistle for 3 times. Wait till the pressure goes down. Remove the lid and mash the rice and toor dal nicely.
In a pan add 2 tsp of oil and allow it to heat up. Now add the chopped tomatoes and saute well. Add the boiled vegetables and saute for 5 min. Add in salt and the turmeric powder and mix.



3. Now add the boiled rice and the toor dal along with some water and let it cook for 5 min on a medium flame stirring frequently. Now add the juice of tamarind and mix well. Allow it to cook for 10 min. Keep stirring frequently to avoid sticking at the bottom.
Add in 2 tbsp of the ground spice powder (Bisi Bele Bath powder) and mix well. Adjust the salt and the consistency.



4. In a pan add in 3 tbsp of oil and 3 tbsp of clarified butter/ghee and allow it to heat up. Now add the mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. Now add the urad dal, red chilies, hing and the curry leaves. Saute for 30 sec and pour it in the rice and mix well.
Add in finely chopped coriander leaves/cilantro and mix.


The delicious Bisi Bele Bath is all ready to be served. Enjoy it warm along with a papad.
