Onion chutney is a delicious side dish for idli and dosa. It’s a very popular and common in most South Indian households. There are different types of onion chutney. This onion chutney is made using sesame oil which makes this chutney taste great. If you don’t have sesame oil you can use other oil. Let’s learn how to make this tasty onion chutney.
Preparation time – 5 minutes
Cooking time – 20 minutes
Serves – 3
Ingredients:
Medium size Onions – 2 chopped into pieces
Small tomato – 1 chopped into pieces
Dry red chilies – 6 or as per your taste
Tamarind – one blueberry size
Garlic – 4 pods cut into pieces
Curry leaves – few
Sesame oil – 3 tbsp
Salt to taste
Seasoning:
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – few
Method:
1. Heat 2 tbsp of Sesame oil in a pan. Add the chopped onions into the pan. Fry the onions by adding little salt. Fry till the onions get soft on a medium heat. Now add the chopped garlic, tamarind and curry leaves into the onions.
2. Fry the mixture for a while. Then add red chilies and fry for another few minutes. Finally add the chopped tomatoes and fry the mixture till the tomatoes gets smashed well. Turn off the stove and transfer the mixture in a plate. Let the mixture cool down.
3. Grind the mixture by adding salt & very little water (4 tbsp). Grind it to a smooth paste. keep aside. Heat 1 tbsp of Sesame oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle. Once the mustard seeds starts to crackle, add in the urad dal and curry leaves.
4. Transfer this seasoning mixture into the chutney bowl and mix it.
