Mint Dal

Mint dal is a delicious recipe which can be served as a side dish for roti or with hot steamed rice. This aromatic dal is a quick and easy preparation using toor dal and mint leaves. This dal can be prepared using moong dal too.

Preparation time – 10 min
Cooking time – 20 min
Serves – 4 to 6

Ingredients:

Toor dal – 1 cup boiled
Mint leaves – 1 bunch, washed and finely chopped
Onion – 1 small finely chopped
Green chilies – 4 or 5 as per your taste
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt – as per your taste
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Red chilies – 3
Asafoetida/hing – 1/8 tsp
Limes – Juice of 2 limes or as per your taste
Oil – required for pan frying

Method:

1. Wash the toor dal couple of times and soak it in some water for 30 minutes. Drain the water from the dal and add it to the pressure pan along with 2 cups of water and let the pressure pan whistle for 2 times. Wait till the pressure goes down completely. Remove the lid and mash the dal well and set it aside.

In a small pan add a 1/2 tsp of oil and allow it to heat up. Now add the green chilies and saute for 3 minutes and allow it to cool down. Add it to the mixie and grind it to a coarse paste.

2. In a pan add in 3 tsp of oil and allow it to heat up. Now add in mustard seeds and let it to splutter. Add in red chilies and the asafoetida and saute for a minute. Now add the onions and cook till the onions are nice and soft. Add in turmeric powder & salt. Add in the finely chopped mint leaves and saute well. Add in the boiled toor dal and the coarsely ground green chilies and mix well.

3. Add some water to the dal and let it boil well for 5 minutes and switch off the stove. Adjust the salt and the consistency according to your taste. Add in the juice of 2 limes to the dal and mix well.

 

The delicious and aromatic Mint Dal is all ready to enjoy with roti or hot steamed rice.
