Bottle gourd is known as ‘Sorakaya’ in telugu and ‘Sorakkai’ in tamil and ‘lauki’ in Hindi. It can be served with rice or roti. Let’s learn how to prepare Bottle gourd fry / sorakkai poriyal following this easy recipe.

Serves – 4
Ingredients:
Small size bottle gourd (sorakkai)- 1 chopped into pieces
Green chilies – 2 cut into pieces
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Grated coconut – 2 tbsp (optional)
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Coriander leaves – few finely chopped
Oil – 2 tbsp
Salt as per your taste
Method:
1. Peel the skin and discard the inner seeds part of Sorakkai/Bottlegourd. Chop the bottle gourd/sorakkai into small pieces.
2. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds. Once it is well roasted add chopped onion and chilies. Fry it for a minute. Add chopped bottle gourd and fry it on a low flame for few minutes.
3. Add required amount of salt and turmeric powder. Fry it on a low flame and pour in some water. Cover the pan and cook it on a medium flame till the bottle gourd is nice and tender (sprinkle in some water if required). Keep stirring for every 2-3 minutes.
4. After 15 minutes (when the water is absorbed), add 2 table spoon of grated coconut and stir it for few minutes. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Now Sorakkai/Bottle gourd Poriyal is ready to serve !!! It goes very well with Roti and rice. It is a great side dish for Vendakkai kuzhambu (okra gravy) & Brinjal gravy /gutti vankaya kura
