Poori/Puri

Poori/Puri is a popular Indian flat bread which is prepared using whole wheat flour and deep fried. It can be eaten for breakfast or as a whole meal with any curry. It is usually served with potato masala but it can be enjoyed with any curry of your choice. It is quick and easy to prepare and one of the kids favorites.

Preparation time – 10 min
Cooking time – 20 min
Makes – 10 to 12 (approx)

Ingredients:

Whole wheat flour – 1 cup
Salt – 1/4 tsp
Oil – 1 tsp (required for making the dough)
Oil –  required for deep frying

Method:

1. In a bowl add the whole wheat flour, salt and a tsp of oil and mix well till the oil gets well incorporated. Now add water little by little to make a slightly stiff dough.

The dough should not be soft it should be little stiff than the chapati dough. The prepared dough can be used immediately for making the pooris/puri.

2. Knead the dough well. Divide the dough into small equal size balls. Flatten each ball slightly. Now roll each ball by dusting very little of flour using a rolling pin as shown in the picture. The rolled poori/puri should be of medium thickness.

3. Heat oil in a deep frying pan on a medium heat. Gently slide the prepared poori/puri in the hot oil. When the poori/puri raises to the top of the oil gently press it with the help of a slotted ladle. When the poori/puri puffs up turn it to the other side and fry till it is golden in color. Repeat the same process for the rest of the dough. Drain the fried pooris/puri on a paper towel to remove the excess oil.

To check whether the oil is hot drop in a small piece of dough in the oil. If it raises immediately then the oil is ready to be used for frying the pooris/puri.

The delicious pooris/puri is all ready to enjoy with curry of your choice.
