Roti is a fresh Indian homemade flat bread made with whole wheat that can be enjoyed with any vegetable or curry. This is one of the famous and common wheat flatbread made by almost everyone in India. In most Indian homes, roti is made for dinner, sometimes even for breakfast too.
Preparation time – 10 minutes
Cooking time – 20 minutes
Serves – 8 to 10 rotis
Ingredients
Whole wheat flour – 1 cup
Water – 1/3 cup
salt – 1/4 tsp or as per your taste
Oil – 1 tsp ( optional)
Method
1. Take 1 cup of flour, add salt and a tsp of oil. Then add 1/3 cup of water gradually little by little and mix the flour with fingers. Start with less water then slowly increase. Knead the dough well until all the dry flour is absorbed and forms into a nice dough. Cover the dough and let it rest for at least 20 minutes. Mixing the dough well in advance makes the roti soft and fluffy.
2. Knead the dough again for few minutes. The more you knead your roti the more softer they will be. Make equal sized balls. Keep some wheat flour ready for dusting.
3. Roll out each ball into the dry flour and dust off the excess flour. Now roll into a thin circle dusting a little wheat flour to avoid sticking. Heat the pan on a medium high flame and place the roti on the pan.
4. Wait until you will see small bubbles forming on the surface. Turn the roti to the other side. Now bubbles will come up on the other side too. Now flip the roti and Press it gently with a flat ladle. The roti will puff up like poori. If the roti does not puff up, the dough may not have been kneaded enough.
5. Take it out from the pan. Apply a little ghee or butter (optional) . Repeat the same process for the rest of the dough.
Enjoy Rotis with any side dish of your choice.
