Fish Curry

This delicious Fish curry is very popular in all over South India. The basic ingredients will be slightly different in each province. Let’s us learn how to make this delicious Tamil Nadu style fish curry.

Preparation time – 15 minutes
Cooking time – 30 minutes
Serves – 4 to 6

Ingredients:

Salmon Fish or any other variety – 1 kg
Onion – 2 medium size chopped into small pieces
Tomatoes – 2 medium size chopped into pieces
Garlic – 12 flakes cut into half
Coriander seeds or powder – 2 tbsp
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Chili powder – 4 tsp or as per your taste
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Tamarind – lemon sized soaked in the water
Curry leaves – few
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Whole black pepper – 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds / methi – 1/2 tsp
Oil – 3 tbsp
Salt as per your taste.

Method:

1. Clean the fish and cut into pieces.  Add a tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder in the fish and keep aside. Soak the tamarind in the water.


2. Heat oil in a pan. When the oil is hot add in the mustard seeds. After the mustard seeds splutters add the black pepper and fenugreek seeds. After a nice aroma comes, add chopped onions, garlic and curry leaves. Fry till the onions gives nice smell  (around 5 to 10 minutes on a medium heat).

Meanwhile, grind all the ingredients together (Coriander seeds or powder, Cumin seeds, Chili Powder and 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder) to a smooth powder.

Now add the chopped tomatoes into the onions and fry till the tomatoes gets smashed.

  

3. Extract the juice from the tamarind and add it to the onion & tomato mixture. Now add the ground spice powder and around 3 cups of water. Let the gravy boil for 10 to 15 minutes on medium heat until the mixture gets thicker. At this point if the gravy is very thicker you can add some water.

Now add the fish slices and salt into the gravy. Let it cook for 5 minutes. Don’t overcook or mix with the ladle as the fish pieces will break. Delicious Fish curry is ready to serve.

  

  

                                                           Serve hot with steamed rice or Idli. Enjoy!!
