Tomato Dal is the most popular Dal in South India. This Dal is very tasty and simple to make. It goes extremely well with steamed rice & roti.
Preparation time – 15 min

Serves – 4 to 6
Ingredients:
Toor dal – 1 cup
Onion – 1 medium sized finely chopped
Green chilies – 2
Tomatoes – 4 medium sized chopped
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Chili powder – 1/4 tsp or as per your taste
Salt – as per your taste
Oil – 2 tbsp
Coriander leaves (Cilantro ) – few leaves finely chopped for garnish
Tempering ingredients:
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Jeera/Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
Red chilies – 2
Urad dal – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – 4 or 5 leaves
Asafoetida ( Hing ) – 1/8 tsp
Method:
1. Wash the toor dal for couple of times and soak it in the water for 20 min. Now put the toor dal with 2 cups of water in a pressure pan and let the pressure pan whistle for 2 times.


2. Add 2 tbsp of oil in a pan. When oil is hot add finely chopped onions and green chilies and saute till the onions are nice and tender. Now add the tomatoes, salt and cook till the tomatoes are nice and soft. Add the turmeric powder and the chili powder.



3. When the tomatoes are nicely cooked add the boiled toor dal and mix well. Add one cup of water and let the dal boil for 10 to 15 min on a medium flame. Adjust the salt and the consistency according to your taste.


4. In an another pan, add 1 tsp of oil. When the oil is hot add the mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. Now add the cumin seeds, red chilies, urad dal, asafoetida and curry leaves and saute for a minute.



5. Transfer the sautéed tempering ingredients to the dal and mix well. Add the finely chopped cilantro.



6. The delicious tomato dal is all ready to enjoy !! It goes well with steamed rice.
